Everything You Will Need to Make the Adjustment to Living at College
When moving away to school for the first time there are often many unexpected curves thrown at you. This page will help you prepare for those unexpected bumps in the road, so you can make the best out of your college experience. | Below I have listed several things which you should consider buying to make your move and stay and college easy, comfortable, and rewarding.
USE FOR CLASS -Typewriter, Word Processor, PC, or laptop -Dictionary / Thesuarus -School Supplies- Pens and Pencils (#2), Note Cards, Paper, Desk Supplies -Stay Organized- ** Get a Day Planner ** USE IN ROOM -TV (may need antenna, depending on whether your housing gives you cable) -Stereo (many students use a computer as their source of musical entertainment) -Entertainment System (computer games, and other entertainment systems provide more entertainment and competition than you could ever imagine at college) -Egg crate and Mattress Cover- These two items go hand in hand in making your bed as comforatble as possible, A featherbed is another good option -Bulletin Board- good for posting important information and fast food menus! -Wall coverings- you are going to be spending a lot of time in your room at school, why not decorate it nicely, posters and tapstries are the most common -Trash Receptacle-most universities provide trash cans in the hallways, but having a small trash container in the room is convenient -Phone- Watch out for interference if your using that old cordless. I would recomend using a 900mz or better if your gonna use a cordless, if not, people may hear your conversations! -Non-perishables- Munchies are always a problem. When the dining halls close you can rely on the snacks that you have hidden away in your room. -Small refridgerator-you may find that small fridges are available for sale or rent by the university and can come in handy when you have a busy schedule. -Lots of the little stuff-you will want to make sure you have plenty of the everyday products like soap, deodorant, razors and replacement blades, and other hygiene products. These items are usually first to run out or dissappear from your room and can be a hassle to replace. |
USE AROUND CAMPUS -Many students find it easy to ride a bike to get around campus, it is completely a personal preference. (Depending on the rules of your university you may or may not be allowed to have a car with you during your freshman year due to parking shortages) -Campus map- Why not carry map of your new campus in your bag? You never know when it might come in handy. -Head Phones- Your walk to class may take you upwards of 15 minutes, many kids keep their minds off class by listening to their favorite music during the walk. -Roller Blades- Another popular means of transportation. Rollerblades should always be accompanied by the proper pads. -Comfortable Walking Shoes- If you're like the rest of us and still prefer to walk to class, make sure that those new kicks are broken in, your feet have never done so much walking. -Sun Screen-The suns rays are responsible for over 100,000 deaths each year. Be sensible, if your school is in the hot sun, use sun block whenever you go outside MISCELLANEOUS -Laundry bag / basket -Quarters (lots of em) -Have your mom or housekeeper teach you how to run a load of dirty clothes through the wash -Detergent and dryer sheets -Fans (If the weather is hot a good fan will save you) -Power Strip- usually there are a limited amount of outlets in the room, bring a power srtip or two so you can have enough outlets for all your electronics -Dark Sheet- a dark sheet has many uses in a college room, whether to keep light out from a window or to hang around your bed for privacy, you'll find a good use for it -A shower basket- this little guy will hold all you fancy soap's, shampoo's, and sponge's so you can bring them to the bathroom with you easily
Get In Touch With Your Roomate(s)
Before you move into your new room at school, it is advised that you speak with your new roomate or roomates to discuss your living habits. You will want to determine who is going to bring what electronic equipment (chances are you will not need two TV sets). You will also want to get an idea of what kind of people you will be living with so find out things about them like musical preferences, what kind of hours they will be keeping, whether or not they drink or smoke, and what kind of person they are in general.
